Corey, J. M., Gertz, C. C., Wang, B. S., Birrell, L. K., Johnson, S. L., Martin, D. C., & Feldman, E. L. (2008). The design of electrospun PLLA nanofiber scaffolds compatible with serum-free growth of primary motor and sensory neurons. Acta biomaterialia, 4(4), 863-875. In this study, the development of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) nanofiber substrates is reported that support serum-free growth of primary motor and sensory neurons at low plating densities. The alignment of neurons grown on this substrate was equal to nanofiber alignment and surpassed the alignment of neurites from explants tested in a previous study. This substrate should facilitate investigating the behavior of many neuronal types on electrospun fibers in serum-free conditions. The serum-free medium, Neurobasal, was supplemented with different additives as specified in the Materials and Methods, under the heading; 2.3.1. Primary sensory neuron culture.
