Journal of bone and mineral metabolism, 27(1), 114-119. In this study, the authors investigated the efficacy of serum-deprived medium (SDM) for osteoclast formation from the murine monocytic cell line, RAW 264.7. These cells can readily differentiate into osteoclasts when exposed to recombinant RANKL, independently of added M-CSF. The conditions for the efficient differentiation of osteoclasts from RAW 264.7 cells in SDM are identified, which will now enable the analysis of factors, which influence osteoclast formation free of the complex influences of serum.
