Nam, Y., Brewer, G. J., & Wheeler, B. C. (2007). Development of astroglial cells in patterned neuronal cultures. Journal of Biomaterials Science, Polymer Edition, 18(8), 1091-1100. In this study, rat hippocampal neurons were plated on substrates with micrometer-scale patterns using serum-free Neurobasal/B27 medium and astroglial growth was measured using a fluorescent immunostaining technique. Astroglial cells started to appear after two weeks and grew rapidly thereafter. Most of the astroglial cells were located near neurons and no serious degradation of neuronal pattern was found in this study. The supplementation of Neurobasal with B27 and other components is specified in the Materials and Methods, under the heading; Cell culture. The formulation of serum-free Neurobasal medium can be found online: https://www.thermofisher.com/nl/en/home/technical-resources/media-formulation.251.html https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1163/156856207781494430?needAccess=true |
